Ramblings

I’m kind of in a slump right now. I have less free time due to my new job and the time I do have I spend either with my friends or playing videogames. Anytime I sit and try to get some coding done I get distracted very easily and my motivation slips away. I hope to come back to development soon and actually get some things done for a change!

Btw i mostly follow game developers on Tumblr and I think most of my followers are, and I really want to tell all of you how interesting your projects are. Keep up your excellent work :)

Crawling towards my goal

I made the switch to OpenGL. I guess I’m building my own 3d engine now, gosh darnit! I hope I will be able to have some units by next month. Also, videos are a-coming :)

The switch

That’s it, i’m switching to OpenGL because SDL’s blitting isn’t fast enough for my project. See you on the other side, if I ever come out alive!

Better terrain with libnoise

So I stumbled upon libnoise las night… I should have googled harder before coding my own perlin noise generator :P The library is quite simple to use and very flexible, it took me about half an hour to totally switch from my own code to libnoise’s functions.

I guess I’ll sitck with the same rendering technique for now:

Minecraft 1.5

The sandbox is slowly but steadily becoming a game now. With achievements and more systems to interact with, I think even more people might be attracted to the game.

No Mo Voxel?

I’m thinking of dropping that faux-voxel thing, and going with a very simple tile map. This would really simplify the game, and I think simple is good. We’ll see !

Inner workings

Well I did some hard work over the last few days. But unfortunately I have nothing new to show off because most of my time was spent on the engine resource manager.

I also went from a colormap to realtime color calculations, wich dropped the terrain framerate from 280 to 160, rendering only the terrain. Of course this is only my first draft of the color computation code so I should be able to improve it if I need some more frames down the road.

I try to keep my morale up since this is the first time that I really feel I could complete a computer game on my own. Plus, this is no tictactoe or tetromino clone…

New dig() function

I fixed my terrain digging function, the code was messy and left edges around the holes it dug. This had a direct effect on my erosion process and now my terrain is all smooth. I think the next step is to add the game resources(trees, rocks, minerals) and maybe add some water.
